The basic meaning of daijoubu is the same as "ok" | 大丈夫の使い方は基本的にokとかこういう意味なんですけど | だいたけおっとのつかいかたはきほんてきにおくとかこういういみなんですけど | daijoubu no tsukai kata wa kihonteki ni ok toka kou iu imi nan desu kedo |
but what is difficult about it is it sometimes also means "no" | なんで難しいかと言うとたまにNoの意味があるからです | なんでむずかしいかとゆうとたまにののいみがあるからです | nan de muzukashī ka to iu to tamani "no" no imi ga aru kara desu |
A very common example would be going to a convenience store | すごいよく使うのはコンビニに行ったときです | すごいよくつかうのはコンビニにおこなったときです | sugoi yoku tsukau no wa konbini ni itta toki desu |
and the clerk will ask "Do you need a bag?" or "Do you need chopsticks?" | 店員さんは、袋いりますか?とか箸入りますか?という風に聞いてきます | てんいんさんは、ふくろいりますか?とかはしいりますか?というかぜにきいてきます | tenin-san wa, fukuro irimasu ka? toka hashi irimasu ka? to iu fuu ni kīte kimasu |
And many people in this situation will say “Oh, no, I'm fine" | そのときに多くの人はあっ大丈夫ですというふうに言います | そのときにおおくのじんはあっだいじょうぶですというふうにいいます | sono toki ni ōku no hito wa aa daijoubu desu to iu fū ni iimasu |
Here daijoubu means "I'm fine without a bag" | ここでの意味は袋がなくて、大丈夫ですの意味なので | ここでのいみはふくろがなくて、だいじょうぶですのいみなので | koko de no imi wa fukuro ga nakute, daijoubu desu no imi na no de |

When you ask "will you be eating this?" "do you need it?" or "is this thing necessary?" | 食べますか?いりますか?とかそういうふうに何か必要ですか?と聞かれたときに | たべますか?いりますか?とかそういうふうになにかひつようですか?ときかれたときに | tabemasu ka? irimasu ka? toka sou iu fū ni nani ka hitsuyou desu ka? to kikareta toki ni |
and you reply with a "Ah, daijoubu" it usually means "no" | あっ大丈夫ですと使うときはNoの意味が多いと思います | あっだいじょうぶですとつかうときはののいみがおおいとおもいます | aa daijoubu desu to tsukau toki wa "no" no imi ga ōi to omoimasu |
By saying "daijoubu" you're not saying "no" directly | 大丈夫ですっていう言い方は直接Noって言っているのではなくて | だいじょうぶですっていうゆいかたはちょくせつぬおってっているのではなくて | daijoubu desu tte iu ii kata wa chokusetsu no tte iu tte iru no de wa nakute |
But when you want to say "oh, I don't need it" in an indirect way you use the word "daijoubu" | ちょっと間接的に「あ、いらないです」っていうことを言いたいときに大丈夫ですを使うので | ちょっとかんせつてきに「あ、いらないです」っていうことをゆいたいときにだいじょうぶですをつかうので | chotto kansetsuteki ni “a, iranai desu” tte iu koto o iitai toki ni daijoubu desu o tsukau no de |
It's a more polite version of saying you don't need something straight away | 直接いらないですって言うよりは優しい表現になります | ちょくせついらないですっていうよりはやさしいひょうげんになります | chokusetsu iranai desu tte iu yori wa yasashī hyougen ni narimasu |

If you ask someone "Should we go to this shop? and they say "I'm fine" (daijoubu) | 「この店行く?」って聞かれた時にその人が「大丈夫」と言ったら | 「このてんいく?」ってきかれたときにそのじんが「だいじょうぶ」といったら | “kono mise iku?” tte kikareta toki ni sono hito ga “daijoubu” to ittara |
You could start wondering which daijoubu they mean by that | ちょっとどっちの意味だろうなっていうふうに迷うときがあります | ちょっとどっちのいみだろうなっていうふうにまようときがあります | chotto docchi no imi darou natte iu fū ni mayou toki ga arimasu |
