Have you ever thought you just suck at learning vocabulary? 皆さん、「自分って単語を覚えるのが苦手だな」って思ったことはありませんか？ minasan, “jibun tte tango o oboeru noga nigate da na” tte omotta koto hāri masenka?
When I was in middle and high school 僕は中学生とか高校生の時、 boku wa chūgakusei toka koukousei no ji,
I couldn't learn English vocabulary for the life of me 英単語を覚えるのがすごく苦手で eitango o oboeru nogasu goku nigate de
I heard from my friend 友達から聞いた tomodachi kara kiita
that when you listen to English words while sleeping you'll remember them. So to try out this method, 寝ている時も英単語を聞いていれば覚えられるよっていう方法を試すために neteiru ji mo eitango o kiiteireba oboerareru yotte iu houhou o tamesu tameni
I bought these expensive headphones and did it 高いイヤホンを買って、やってみたんですけど takai iyahon o katte, yattemita nde suke do
And surprise surprise I didn't remember anything もちろん覚えなかったよね mochiron oboenakatta yone
Apart from "Hi Tom" Hi Tomしか覚えてない hi to m shika oboete nai
and I can only use that when I meet a Tom Tomに会った時しか使えないよね to m ni atta ji shika tsukaenai yone
Also I heard this weird thing from a friend あとは友達のよくわからない a toha tomodachi no yoku wakaranai
That people have two eyes 人間は右と左の目があるから jin aida wa migi to hidari no moku ga aru kara
and so you can put down two books and look at one with your left eye and at the other with your right eye 本を二つ置いて、右目は右の本を左目は左の本を見ながら hon o futatsu oite, migime wa migi no hon o hidarime wa hidari no hon o mina gara
and learn vocabulary that way 単語を覚えれば大丈夫っていう方法があったんですけど tango o oboereba daijoubu tteiu houhou ga atta nde suke do
I was an idiot apparently ちょっと僕はバカだったので chotto boku wa baka datta node
because I believed it and tried それを少し信じてやってみたんですけど sore o sukoshi shinjite yattemita nde suke do
My eyes went more and more apart だんだん目が離れていって dan dan moku ga hanaretei tte
I got a bit dizzy 少しおかしくなって sukoshi okashiku natte
and thought: what, maybe I am learning it あれ、なんか覚えられてるかもっていう状態になりました are, nanka oboerareteru kamotte iu jou nari nina ri mashita
that's dangerous though いや、危ない、危ない iya, abunai, abunai
So it's enough to say I tried out a fair share of methods だからいろいろな単語を覚える方法をやってきた僕が dakara iro iro na tango o oboeru houhou o yatte kita boku ga
So I wanted to share which methods aren’t efficient これをやっている人は効率が悪いという方法を教えます kore o yatteiru jin wa kouritsu ga warui toiu houhou o oshiemasu
I’ve made a video before on how to learn vocabulary 前に単語の覚え方の動画を作ったんですけど maeni tango no oboe kata no douga o tsukutta nde suke do
But if you’re making these mistakes it won’t work even if you’ve seen that video それを見ていてもやってはいけない覚え方をしている人はあまり意味がないです sore o miteite moyatte haike nai oboe kata woshite iru jin hā mari imiganaidesu
So first please make sure you're not making the following mistakes ですのでまずはやってはいけない方法を覚えてください desu node mazuha yatte haike nai houhou o oboetekudasai
First one - writing the same word over and over again まず1つ目は同じ単語を繰り返して書く人です mazu 1 tsu moku wa dou ji tango o kurikaeshite kaku jin desu
Whaat! I'm sure you've done it before えー！これ絶対やってたよね e! kore zettai yatte ta yone
I know you're thinking writing it many times is good 何回も書くからいいんじゃないの？って思うと思うんですけど nankaimo kaku karai inja nai no? tte omou to omou nde suke do
But it's not really like that そうじゃないんですよ sou janai ndesu yo
Japanese practice writing characters from a young age 僕たち日本人は小さい時に毎日漢字を書く練習がありました bokutachi nihon jin wa chīsai tokini mainichi kanji o kaku renshū ga arimashita
The teacher would give us homework 学校の先生が宿題を出して gakkou no sensei ga shukudai o dashite
and everyone would do it at home みんなそれを家でやっていくんですけど minna sore o ie de yatteiku nde suke do
And on the test the next day some people would do better and some worse 次の日にある漢字テストでいい点数を取る人と悪い点数を取る人がいました tsugi no nichi nia ru kanji tesuto dei i tensuu o toru jin to warui tensuu o toru jin gai mashita
So I was wondering where this difference comes from それで僕、何で点数がそんなに違うのと思って sorede boku, nande tensuu gaso nna ni chigau noto omotte
and when I looked at the differences 違いを見ていたら chigai o miteitara
People who had bad scores would write 1 character ten times なんか悪い点数の人は1つの漢字をまず最初に10個書いて nanka warui tensuu no jin wa 1 tsuno kanji o mazu sai hatsuni 10 ko kaite
then go to the next one and write it 10 times 終わったら次の漢字を10個を書いていました owattara tsugi no kanji o 10 ko o kaiteimashita
But the people with good scores were writing each character once でも点数のいい人はそれ何の漢字を1つずつ書いていて demo tensuu no ī jin wa sore dono kanji o 1 tsu zutsu kaiteite
and once they finish they'd repeat it again 全部終わったらまた上から1つずつ書いていっていました zenbu owattara matagami kara 1 tsu zutsu kaite ittei mashita
So what can we get from this is これどういうことかというと kore douiu koto kato iu to
Have you ever heard of Gestalt decomposition? 皆さんはゲシュタルト崩壊って聞いたことありませんか？ minasan wa geshutaruto houkai tte kiita koto ari masenka?
It's when you write the same character all the time なんか同じ文字をずっと書いてると nanka dou ji fumi aza o zutto kaite ru to
and it stops having any meaning to you もう何書いているかよくわかんなくなっちゃうっていう現象のことです mou nani kaiteiru kayoku wakannaku nacchau tteiu genshou no koto desu
The same thing happens with those writing the same character 10 times in a row これと同じで1つの漢字を10個書いていた人は kore to dou ji de 1 tsuno kanji o 10 ko kaiteita jin wa
With the last 5 characters they weren't even aware of what they're writing anymore もうたぶん最後の5 個ぐらいはあまり何書いているかよくわかんない状態だったんですよ mouta bun sai ato no 5 ko gurai hā mari nani kaiteiru kayoku wakannai joutai datta ndesu yo
If you try doing it I'm sure you know what I mean だから皆さんもやってみるとわかると思うんですけど dakara minasan moyatte miru towa ka ru to omou nde suke do
After you write one kanji character many times 1つの漢字をたくさん書いていくと終わった後に 1 tsuno kanji o takusan kaite iku to owatta nochini
and look back at the first kanji, you won't remember anything 最初の漢字を見ると、あれって全然覚えてないと思います sai hatsu no kanji o miru to, are tte zenzen oboete naito omoimasu
And it goes the same with learning vocabulary もちろん単語を覚えるときも同じで mochiron tango o oboeru toki mo dou ji de
After you write one word, you should write a different one 1つの単語を書いたら、次の単語を書く 1 tsuno tango o kaitara, tsugi no tango o kaku
and repeat it like that そういうふうに繰り返してください souiu fū ni kuri kaeshitekudasai
The next point is when people try to memorize only the vocabulary 2つ目は単語だけを覚えようとしている人です 2 tsu moku wa tango dake o oboeyou toshite iru jin desu
But it's so much better to make up phrases and remember those フレーズをつくって覚えたほうがいいです furēzu o tsukutte oboeta hougaī desu
Give me a break, Hitoki やめてくれよ、ひとき yame teku re yo, hito ki
I can't even remember words and you're telling me to remember whole sentences! 単語も覚えられないのに、文章を覚えられるわけがないだろう！ tango mo oboerarenai noni, bunshou o oboerareru wakeganai darou!
Wait, wait 待って、待って matte, matte
I'm studying Spanish so I understand 僕もスペイン語勉強してるからわかる boku mo supeingo benkyou shite ruka ra wakaru
There are so many words I have to learn, so I can't really make a phrase for each and every one of them たくさん覚えないといけない単語があるのに1つ1つフレーズ作れないよね takusan oboenai toi kenai tango ga aru noni 1 tsu 1 tsu furēzu tsukurenai yone
That's why what I'm proposing is だから僕からの提案なんですけど dakara boku ka ra no teian nande suke do
to look at the vocabulary textbook and only make phrases for words that are absolutely necessary for everyday life 単語帳の中で生活に本当に必要な単語だけフレーズを作りましょう tango tobari no ata de seikatsu ni hontouni hitsuyou na tango dake furēzu o tsukurimashou
Because like, are you going to use a word like "iron" when you can't speak Japanese properly? だってさ、まだ日本語話せないのにさ、「鉄」って使う？ datte sa, mada nihongo hanasenai noni sa, “tetsu” tte tsukau?
or "writer,” do you use that? 作家って使う？ sakka tte tsukau?
Maybe some people use it 使う人もいるかもしれないですけど tsukau jin mo iru kamoshirenai desu kedo
First I think you should learn words like “wake up,” ”sleep” and “eat” まず、最初は「起きる」とか「寝る」とか「食べる」とかよく使う単語を覚えると思います mazu, sai hatsu wa “okiru” toka “neru” toka “taberu” to kayoku tsukau tango o oboeru to omoimasu
and make phrases with words like that だからこういう単語でフレーズを作るんですけど dakara kouiu tango de furēzu o tsukuru nde suke do
And it's good to make these phrases なんでフレーズを作るといいかというと nande furēzu o tsukuru toi ika toiuto
because you can develop a "Japanese brain" 日本語の頭ができるからです nichi hon kata no atama ga deki ruka ra desu
For example when you learn the word "tsukau" (to use) 例えば「使う」という動詞を覚えるときに tatoeba “tsukau” toiu doushi o oboeru tokini
if you remember it in a phrase "Pasokon o tsukaitai" (I want to use the PC") 一緒に「パソコンを使いたい」というフレーズを覚えたら ichi o ni “pasokon o tsukaitai” toiu furēzu o oboetara
"Where's the PC?" "I want to use the PC" １人でいる時もパソコンどこパソコン使いたいというふうに １ jin dei ru ji mo pasokon doko pasokon tsukaitai toiu fū ni
And you can do it all in your head 自分の中で、なんか話ができるんですよね ji bunno ata de, nanka hana ga dekiru ndesu yone
If you do that, you'll be able to use it a lot even without a person to talk to そうすると話す相手がいなくてもどんどん自分の中でたくさん使われて sousuruto hanasu sou te gai nakutemo dondon ji bunno ata deta kusa n tsukawarete
And when you remember more and more phrases you’ll gradually become able to express a lot more things しかもフレーズが増えるとだんだん言えることが多くなってきて shikamo furē zu ga fueru to dandan ieru koto ga ōku natte kite
and before you know it you'll be able to talk to Japanese people 何か気づいたら日本人と話せるようになったいることが本当にあるんですよ nanika kidzuitara nihon jin to hanaseru youninatta iru koto ga hontouni aru ndesu yo
That's how I learned English 僕は英語は本当にそれで勉強しました boku wa eigo wa hontouni sorede benkyou sumashita
But to be honest with Chinese I lived in Taiwan 中国語はまあ正直台湾に行ってたので chūgokugo wa mā shoujiki dai wan ni okonatte ta node
and had people to talk to there そこで話す人もいたので sokode hanasu jin mo ita node
So I can't say I learned Chinese by speaking to myself 僕が1人で話してたから話せるようになったとは言えないんですけど boku ga 1 jin de hanashite takara hanaseru youninatta toha ienai nde suke do
But with English I talked to myself and now I can speak more or less 英語は本当に僕1人で話していて、今少し話せるので eigo wa hontouni boku 1 jin de hanashiteite, imasukoshi hanaseru node
at least on a conversational level for sure コミュニケーションレベルは全然いけます komyunikēshon re beru wa zenzen ikemasu
Of course I also recommend this to people who want to take the JLPT exams もちろん、「JLPT 日本語能力試験」を受けたい人もこれはすごくオススメです mochiron, “JLPT nihongonouryokushiken” o uketai jin moko re hasu goku osusume desu
Of course if it's just everyday words it probably won't be enough 確かに日常生活の単語だけだと全然足り ないんですけど tashikani nichijou seikatsu no tango dake dato zenzen tari nai nde suke do
but developing that Japanese brain makes learning new vocabulary much faster 日本語の頭ができると新しい単語を覚えるのはすごく速くなります nichi hon kata no atama ga deki ru to atarashī tango o oboeru no hasu goku hayaku nari masu
Because you know, when you learn a new word だって皆さんも新しい言葉を覚えるときに datte minasan mo atarashī kotoba o oboeru tokini
in your own language it's very easy 自分の国の言葉だったらすぐ覚えられるけど ji bunno kuni no kotoba datta ra sugu oboerare ru kedo
but if it's a foreign language like Japanese it's a bit harder isn't it 日本語とか外国語だったらちょっと覚えにくいですよね nichi hon kata toka gaikokugo dattara chotto oboe nikuidesu yone
So that's also the same. Also when you talk to people それも同じだし、あとは他の人と話す soremo dou jida sh, a toha ta no jin to hanasu
the experience of speaking with somebody is a great stimulation for your memory やっぱり誰かと話すっていう経験はすごくいい刺激になって記憶に残りやすいので yappari dare kato hanasu tteiu keiken hasu goku ī shigeki ninatte kioku ni nokori yasui node
And you're able to learn new words much faster どんどん新しい単語を覚えていきます dondon atarashī tango o oboetei kumasu
The third mistake is when people don't try to pronounce the words 3つ目のダメな人は、単語を発音しない人です 3 tsu moku no dame na jin wa, tango o hatsuon shinai jin desu
But like, isn't it pretty creepy when you're learning vocabulary alone and muttering to yourself でもさ、単語を覚えるときに1人でぶつぶつ言っていたら気持ち悪くない? demo sa, tango o oboeru tokini 1 jin debu tsu butsu yūtteitara kimochi warukunai?
No, bear with it いや、我慢して iya, gaman shite
Do you really have to look cool while studying vocabulary? 単語を覚えるときにそんなかっこよくなりたい？ tango o oboeru tokini sonna kakkoyoku nari tai?
Just stop it with your expensive pen, expensive notebook そんな高いペンと高いノートを持って sonna takai pen to takai nōto o motte
So you're going to go to Starbucks, open that MacBook and study there? スターバックスに行ってMacBookを開いてそこで単語を勉強する？ sutā bakkusu ni okonatte ma cBook o aite sokode tango o benkyou suru?
Sipping your coffee, having music on full blast コーヒー飲みながら、音楽ガンガン聞いて kōhī nomi nagara, ongaku gangan kiite
and just looking at the words 単語を見るだけはもうやめよ tango o miru dake hamo u yame yo
We have 5 senses as humans 人間には感覚が5つあるので ningen niha kankaku ga 5 tsu aru node
So we should use all of them, not just look それを全部使って、見るだけじゃなくて sore o zenbu tsukatte, miru dake janakute
after looking, we should write the word, say it 見たらその単語を書いてそれを話して mitara sono tango o kaite sore o hanashite
listen to how it sounds. Doesn't using different senses like so sound more effective? 自分で言った言葉を聞いていろんな感覚を使って覚えた方が効率いいと思いませんか？ jibunde yūtta kotoba o kiiteiro nna kankaku o tsukatte oboeta kata ga kouritsu ī to omoi masenka?

Also lately I haven't been speaking Chinese あとやっぱ最近僕中国語あまり話してないので ato yappa saikin boku chūgokugo amari hanashite nai node
I still have the Chinese brain 何か中国語の頭はあるんですけど nanika chūgokugo no atama hā ru nde suke do
But my mouth is just not moving the right way なんか口があまりうまく動かないんですよね nanka kuchi ga amari umaku ugokanai ndesu yone
So no matter how well I can think in Chinese だから逆にそれはどんなに中国語の頭があっても dakara gyakuni soreha donnani chūgokugo no atama ga atte mo
if I don't speak my mouth and other senses will forget Chinese ちゃんと話してないと口とか他の感覚が中国語をちょっと忘れて chanto hanashite naito kuchi toka ta no kankaku ga chūgokugo o chotto wasurete
and I won't be able to speak anymore 話せるようになくなっちゃうっていうことです hanaseru youni nakunacchau tteiu koto desu
So recently I've been talking to myself in Chinese だから最近は僕もたまに1人で中国語を話したりするんですけど dakara saikin wa boku mota mani 1 jin de chūgokugo o hanashitari suru nde suke do
For example "Oh no, I lost my PC” or 例えば「どうしよう、俺のパソコンなくなった tatoeba “doushiyou, ore no pasokon nakunatta
"I wanted to finish my homework..." 今日宿題終わらせたいのに kyou shukudai owarase tai noni
"But I can't find my PC” でも、俺のパソコンが見つからない demo, ore no paso ko n ga mitsukaranai
"Ahh, I'm done for" ああ、俺はもう終わった」 ā, ore hamo u owatta”
Okay, maybe I'm not overreacting like that ここまでオーバーリアクションじゃないですけど koko made ōbā riakushon janai desu kedo
But I'm paying attention to pronunciation so that my mouth doesn't forget Chinese ちゃんと発音をして、ちゃんと口も中国語を忘れないようにしています chanto hatsuon woshite, chanto kuchi mo chūgokugo o wasurenai youni suteimasu
So even if you looked at words and remember them だから皆さんがもし見て単語を覚えたとしても dakara mina sanga moshi mite tango o oboeta toshitemo
I don't think people who’ve never pronounced them can speak Japanese 多分発音したことない人は全然日本語話せないと思います tabun hatsuon shita koto nai jin wa zenzen nihongo hanase naito omoimasu
If you're going to go through the trouble of learning, why not せっかく勉強するなら効率が良くて sekkaku benkyou suruna ra kouritsu ga yokute
do it effectively and study words that are useful? しかもちゃんと使える日本語を勉強しませんか？ shikamo chanto tsukaeru nihongo o benkyou sumasen ka?

and use the Japanese above to speak Japanese as I'm speaking その上に日本語の字幕もあるので僕が話しているように日本語を話して sono nobo ni nichi hon kata no aza maku mo aru node boku ga hanashiteiru youni nihongo o hanashite
After you learn like that それを覚えたら sore o oboetara
I'm sure you'll really be able to speak Japanese もう本当に日本語は話せるようになると思います mou hontouni nichi hon kata wa hanaseru youni naruto omoimasu
I decided on a couple of things in my videos 僕、動画の中で決めていることがあって boku, douga no ata de kimeteiru kotogātte
the first one is choosing natural and versatile Japanese words 1つ目は自然な日本語でいろいろなところで使える言葉を選んでいる 1 tsu moku wa ji zen na nihongo deiro iro na tokorode tsukaeru kotoba o erandeiru
Next is talking about various topics あと話すトピックを色々なのにして ato hanasu topikku o iroiro nanoni shite
when discussing that topic そのトピックでたくさん使いそうな言葉を使っている sono topikku deta kusa n tsukai souna kotoba o tsukatteiru
and then adding in some new words I haven't used before in a video あとは少しだけ僕の動画では使ったことない新しい言葉を入れている a toha sukoshi dake boku no douga deha tsukatta koto nai atarashī kotoba o ireteiru
and the last one is, since Japanese in news or movies is very difficult, そして最後はニュースとか映画の日本語 ってすごく難しいけど soshite sai ato wa nyūsu toka eiga no nihongo tte sugoku muzukashī kedo
before you're on that level, if you reach my level そこのレベルにいくまでに僕のレベルができると soko no reberu nī kuma de ni boku no re beru ga deki ru to
you'll be able to have a conversation with people and then watching movies too will become a bit easier 他の人とも 話せるし、それで映画も少し聞きやすくなっていると思います ta no jin tomo hanase ru sh, sorede eiga mo sukoshi kiki yasuku nattei ru to omoimasu
That's why it's good to use my videos to make your phrases ですので僕の動画からフレーズを作るのもいいと思います desu node boku no douga kara furēzu o tsukuru no mo ī to omoimasu
